Various agricultural products with high added value are produced, such as the chrysanthemums grown under artificial light, grapes, pears, strawberries, and eggplants, other than Yame tea, the established brand tea. The city has recently focused on supporting new farmers and nurturing the energetic creators of Yame agriculture. (P10-P11)Nature x creatorsThe whole town is therapeutic. Nature in Yame calms the mind and body. Flowers exhibit beautiful colors every season, the deep green and blue river water in the ravine provide healing effects, and the mountains are known as “mountainous Yame” in Fukuoka. You will find new attraction seach time you visit. On the Kyushu Olle Yame course, you can walk at your own pace and enjoy nature with the five senses. Kurogi-machi is certified as a forest bathing basesupported by scientific evidence. A forest guide will walk with you in the forest. Please enjoy the hospitality of nature in Yame. (P12-P13)Craftsmanship x creatorsThe fresh streams and the earth have provided a number of blessings. A variety of traditional crafts have been created and passed down. Yame is called the “village of handicrafts,” and thrives from the many traditional crafts in a small area, such as the Yame Fukushima household Buddhist alters, Yame lanterns, Yame handmade Japanese paper, and Yame stone lanterns. Japanese paper has been used for hand rolling in the tea process from olden days, which helped to produce the highest-class brand of Yame tea. Handicrafts started as the side job of farmers in the Edo period, which was established thanks to the incentive policy in the Meiji period, and grew into a traditional industry. Handicrafts affect the culture of Yame and have been taken over by craftsmen.(P16-P17)The Iwatoyama Tumulus is the largest keyhole-shaped tomb mound in northern Kyushu. It is considered　the tomb of Iwai who ruled the Yame area in the early sixth century. He seems to have achieved the height of prosperity by using his own connection route to the mainland. According to the Chronicles of Japan, in 527, in the　Keitai-okimi (who later became emperor) period, the Iwai War broke out, which was deeply associated with the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and in 528, his son Kuzuko offered to end the war with the Kasuyanomikake (domain). After that, the Tsukushinokimi clan remained strong, and large keyhole-shaped tombs like the Tsurumiyama Tumulus were constructed one after another. The Iwai War was the largest civil war in ancient history. Iwai started the war to protect Yame from the heavy burden of the Yamato sovereignty. He was a hero of his native province.(P14-P15)Traditional taste x creatorsCommerce and industry of the area thrived in the Edo period, and houses for merchants and craftsmen were built one after another in Yame Fukushima. You can still see the original appearance from those days in the townscape of white walls, the colors of white and black, and the substantial-looking houses. They have been carefully protected for a long time. Also, traditional performing arts have roots in the region. People have inherited and passed down the living culture of Yame. You can see their spirit in the prayers, dances, and songs.History x creators(P18-P19)In the Edo period, Yame Fukushima developed as a strategic location along the road between Kurume and Bungo. The city flourished while creating haiku, crafts, and lantern puppets. After the Meiji period, Yame produced many cultural figures including oil painters, literary critics, haiku poets, and writers, which is another attraction of Yame. Literary monuments are constructed throughout the city. You can see them while you walk to experience the flavor of a rich culture. Creators have been improving the tangible and intangible elements of the area and the people of Yame throughout history. People never stop appreciating, learning, and studying.
